The House That Made Her Sick: Mold, Lyme, and the Bigger Picture Behind Chronic Illness

Michael Rubino

May 7

What if your symptoms weren’t random, but a response to the environment you’re living in?

In this episode of Never Been Sicker, Michael Rubino sits down with integrative health practitioner Alex Marie Freed to share a story that began the way many do:

With symptoms that didn’t make sense.

At the end of 2019, Alex went from feeling completely healthy to experiencing daily migraines, severe nausea, vomiting, panic attacks, dizziness, chronic fatigue, anxiety, and overwhelming food sensitivities.

Like most people, she started searching for answers through the conventional healthcare system.

Instead, she was repeatedly told it was stress, anxiety, or pregnancy-related symptoms.

But something didn’t add up.

Around the same time her health began to decline, Alex and her family had moved into a fixer-upper home with a known history of flooding. As time went on, the connection between her environment and her symptoms became harder to ignore.

Eventually, Alex was diagnosed with mold toxicity, Lyme disease, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Hyperemesis Gravidarum, and Placenta Previa.

But even with diagnoses… she still wasn’t getting better.

Who You’re Listening To: Alex Marie Freed

Alex Marie Freed is the Founder and Lead Practitioner of Elliott Ray Holistic Wellness, a virtual practice focused on helping families navigate chronic illness through a root-cause lens.

Her personal health journey included severe chronic symptoms, mold toxicity, Lyme disease, MCAS, debilitating food sensitivities, and neurological symptoms that eventually left her bedridden and unable to function normally.

After restoring her health, Alex became a Certified Integrative Health Practitioner and Bioenergetic Practitioner focused on helping others understand inflammation, toxic load, resilience, and terrain-based healing.

Today, she helps individuals and families better understand the connections between environment, chronic illness, nervous system health, and long-term recovery.

When Symptoms Keep Escalating

One of the most powerful parts of Alex’s story is how quickly her health spiraled.

What began as migraines and nausea eventually became something much larger.

She went from being an active mother to:

  • being bedridden
  • reacting to foods and environments
  • experiencing severe panic attacks and anxiety
  • struggling to tolerate normal daily life
  • requiring constant support from her husband and family

At one point, even walking into a doctor’s office became overwhelming.

And yet, despite how serious her symptoms became, she continued hearing versions of the same message:

“It’s stress.”

“It’s anxiety.”

“It’s probably normal.”

That experience is something many people dealing with chronic illness know all too well.

The Environmental Piece That Gets Missed

A major turning point in Alex’s story came when she began learning more about environmental illness.

Her family’s home had a history of flooding. During renovations and additional water events, areas were not dried or contained properly. Over time, the environment itself became part of the larger health picture.

This episode highlights an important reality:

Environmental issues are not always obvious.

A home can look clean. Smell normal. Appear completely fine on the surface.

And still contain hidden water damage or contamination affecting the people living inside.

Michael and Alex also discuss how poor remediation practices can sometimes make exposure worse by disturbing contaminated materials without proper containment.

Mold, Lyme, MCAS, and the “Toxic Load” Concept

Another major theme throughout the conversation is the idea of toxic load.

Instead of viewing mold, Lyme disease, MCAS, and inflammation as completely separate issues, Alex explains how they often overlap.

The body can compensate for stressors… until it reaches a threshold.

That threshold may include:

  • mold exposure
  • chronic infections
  • nervous system stress
  • poor sleep
  • environmental toxins
  • immune dysregulation
  • emotional stress
  • nutritional depletion

Once enough stress accumulates, symptoms begin appearing across multiple systems in the body.

This framework also helps explain why two people can be exposed to the same environment and respond very differently.

What Is Terrain-Based Healing?

One of the most important concepts in the episode is terrain-based healing.

Instead of focusing only on eliminating symptoms, this approach looks at the overall condition of the body and asks bigger questions:

  • Is the nervous system regulated?
  • Are detoxification pathways functioning well?
  • Is the environment continuing to trigger stress?
  • Does the body have the resources it needs to recover?

Alex explains that one of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to force aggressive protocols before the body is stable enough to tolerate them.

For many people, healing starts with supporting foundational systems first.

That may include:

  • improving sleep
  • reducing environmental exposure
  • supporting drainage pathways
  • calming the nervous system
  • rebuilding resilience gradually

This shift became a major turning point in her recovery.

From Bedridden to Recovered

Today, Alex no longer experiences the debilitating symptoms that once controlled her life.

She’s gone from being bedridden and severely reactive…

to running a wellness practice, raising four children, and helping other families navigate chronic illness and environmental health challenges.

Her story is not about a quick fix.

It’s about what can happen when someone finally begins addressing the bigger picture instead of chasing symptoms individually.

The Bigger Takeaway

One of the strongest messages in this episode is that chronic illness is rarely about one thing.

It is often the result of multiple stressors converging over time until the body can no longer compensate effectively.

And sometimes, the missing piece isn’t just inside the body.

It’s in the environment surrounding it every day.

For people who feel dismissed, overwhelmed, or stuck searching for answers, this conversation offers something important:

A reminder that symptoms are signals.

And understanding the full picture may be the first step toward changing it.
